Not all animals placed inside an animal gas chamber to be gassed to death - die.

There have been numerous animal gas chamber survivors that we know of.Many more animals have survived only to be placed in the gas chamber again to meet their fate - an agonizing, inhumane death.Surviving an animal gas chamber is further proof these barbaric death boxes don't always work. Here are some of the survivors who made headlines and helped bring awareness to the gas chamber issue.

Meet the survivors.

2003 Quentin

ST. LOUIS  — A dog who gained attention 14 years ago when he emerged alive from a St. Louis gas chamber for strays has died.Quentin’s death was announced Sunday by his owner, Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis. The mixed-breed dog had suffered a stroke.Quentin was among eight dogs that were to be euthanized at the city pound’s gas chamber in 2003. Quentin’s owners surrendered him because they were moving to an apartment that didn’t allow pets.

The dogs were placed in an airtight box, and carbon monoxide was pumped in. Seven died, as expected. But somehow Quentin survived with no ill effects.R.I.P Quentin.

When workers opened the door, they were shocked to see this dog still alive, although in very bad shape. The dog, named Amazing Grace by shelter workers, was rushed to the a local veterinarian and is being cared for now.As a result, the shelter has decided to stop using the gas chamber and plans to change to lethal injection instead.

2011 Daniel the Beagle

Who is this miracle dog?
A 5-year-old beagle who was left in a box outside of an Alabama shelter. He was scheduled to be euthanized on October 3 along with 18 other dogs. An animal control officer put several of the dogs into the gas chamber and set it for the standard 17-minute cycle. When the officer returned to fetch the bodies, the little beagle was still alive and wagging his tail.

How did he survive?
No one really knows. The dog might have had a slight cold and been breathing shallowly. Variables like the number of animals in a chamber, the concentration of the carbon monoxide, and a dog's age and health can also affect survival chances.

2011 Andrea the Cat

CAT WHO SURVIVED 2 GAS CHAMBER SHELTER KILLING ATTEMPTS

Officials at the West Valley City animal shelter put the cat, named Andrea, into a small box in October and pumped poisonous gas into the chamber. But the cat survived, so they gassed her again.Presuming she was dead the second time, US shelter officials put the cat's body into a plastic bag in a 40 degree cooler. But, when an employee opened the fridge later the cat was found alive, meowing, and trying to leap out of the bag.
